Better financial and budget reporting

Action

The Liberals will introduce quarterly reports on the budget.

What this means for you

Better financial information and transparency means you know what Governments are doing with your money.

This year, Premier and Treasurer Lara Giddings said that she was considering sacking up to 2,300 police, teachers and nurses because the budget is out of control.

In fact, between July last year and February this year the budget became a complete mess.  One way we can make sure this never happens again is to provide more frequent budget updates.

The Tasmanian Liberals believe that Tasmanians should know exactly what is happening with the budget.  After all, it’s taxpayers’ money, not the Government’s.

Tasmanian taxpayers own some of the biggest companies in the state.  But the way the Government manages them, you wouldn’t know it.

Before the last election, Labor promised to cap increases in power bills to five per cent and that Aurora would pay for the cap.  But just weeks after the election

Labor said it was breaking its promise because Aurora was on the brink of financial collapse.

It’s simply not good enough for major taxpayer owned companies to be on the brink of collapse without anyone knowing about it.

Tasmanians literally have billions of dollars invested in these companies and they provide services that nearly all of us rely on in one way or another.  All

Tasmanians have a right to know exactly what is happening with the businesses they own.

We will require all taxpayer owned businesses to report quarterly on their financial performance.
