Downward Pressure on Electricity Bills
Action
The Tasmanian Liberals will bring competition into the retail electricity market from the beginning of July 2012.
What this policy means for you
Tasmanian households will be able to choose which electricity retailer they buy their power from – leading to competition and the lowest possible power prices.
Electricity prices in Tasmania have skyrocketed over the past few years. Prices are set to rise a further 27 percent in the next three years – without taking into account the Labor-Green Carbon Tax which will push power prices by an additional $300 per year.
The Government has rightly allowed its own departments – and even the Hydro! – to source cheaper energy from alternative energy suppliers, but they refuse to allow the same access to competition for Tasmanian households and small businesses.
Despite desperate calls for help from Tasmanian households and small businesses, the Labor-Green government has refused to act and even has gone so far as to say that they will “protect” Tasmanians from competition (and downward pressure on prices).
The Tasmanian Liberals will take the positive step of introducing competition into the electricity retail market, to assist Tasmanians struggling with their power bills. This will enable people to choose who they buy their electricity from, which will inevitably bring about the lowest possible power prices.
This is another part of our positive agenda to help Tasmanians with the issues affecting them – like the cost of living.
