Local Benefits Test

Action

The Liberals will introduce a local benefits test for small business, requiring government to take into account the wider community and social benefits of purchasing decisions.

What this policy means for you

Tasmanian businesses will be able to compete for government contracts on a level playing field, meaning more local jobs and growth in the economy.

The Tasmanian Liberals strongly support Tasmania’s 38,000 small businesses, which are the engine room of our economy and which support thousands of local jobs.

Government is the biggest purchaser in Tasmania, and where possible, the Liberals believe that the Government should support Tasmanian businesses, especially small businesses.

Yet we’ve seen the Labor-Green Government ditching local firms in favour of interstate competitors for relatively minor savings without taking into account the effect on the wider community.

That is why we have introduced legislation to implement a local benefits test, to make sure local businesses can benefit from Government spending.

Tasmania needs to act now. New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland have either already put in place local benefit tests or are in the process of doing so.

This Government has failed to deliver and if we don’t act, Tasmania will be left behind.

This legislation is another part of our positive agenda for Tasmania. We are determined to provide real leadership from Opposition, in the absence of any such leadership from the indecisive Labor-Green government.
