No Forced School Closures

Action

The Liberals will not forcibly close schools.

What this policy means for you

Communities across the state have the local school at its heart. Under the Liberals’ policy there will be no forced closures, providing for the educational needs of the community and keeping the community together.

In the 2011/12 Budget, Labor and the Greens, without warning, unveiled a policy to close 20 schools across the state. This caused untold grief and pain to the communities in which those schools were located.

While Nick McKim has extended the consultation period for school closures out until next year, the fact remains that those schools remain under threat by the Labor-Green policy to close schools.

Unlike Labor and the Greens, the Liberals’ policy is to not forcibly close any schools.

With savings identified in the budget, the Liberals proposed the establishment of a $60 million Education Investment and School Retention Fund which would enable these schools to remain open while at the same time improving the educational outcomes at these schools.

Only the Liberals understand the importance of local schools and only the Liberals have committed to protect these schools from forced closures.
